In 2006, the Steelers starting center was Jeff Hartings. Sean Mahan was the starter in 2007.
The Steelers were founded by Art Rooney Sr. on July 8, 1933. They were called the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1933-1939, the Steelers from 1940-1942, Phil-Pitt "Steagles" in 1943, Card-Pitt in 1944 and then they kept the Steelers name from 1945 to the present.

The helmet is solid black with a gold central stripe and small white player numbers on the forehead. Last names were added to the jerseys in 1970, as part of a new NFL mandate resulting from the AFL-NFL merger (the AFL teams had last names on the back of their jerseys). In 1997, the team switched to rounded numbers on the jersey to match the number font (Futura Condensed) on the helmets, and a Steelers logo was added to the left side of the jersey.
Joe Santoni of Charleroi Pennsylvania named the Steelers in 1938 when he entered a contest held by a Pittsburgh newspaper "to name the Football team." He entered two names, the Steelers and the Smokies both referring to the steel making in the region. When his name was selected Joe won a season pass for the next year and he remained a loyal Steeler fan until his death in October 2003 at the age of 82.
