Limestone is a type of sedimentary rock and has many purposes. It is commonly used in architecture, but is very reactive to acid rain, which can be a problem for many structures. It can also be used to make paper whiter, added to toothpaste, added to bread for calcium, and sometimes is used to neutralize very acidic soils.

Limestone is what farmers use on their fields to kill the acid in the soil so their crops grow, as limestone is an alkaline. Acid + Alkaline = Neutral. Limestone is used for concrete, glass, bricks, cement, glass and roads. It is also used for building buildings and making sculptures, as limestone is hard, strong, lasts long, carves well and looks nice too. An average house contains 50 tonnes of limestone. Limestone is also grinded for cosmetics and toothpaste, and is added to cereals and bread as a source of calcium, after they've pulverised and neutralised it. Limestone is also added to water to purify it. Limestone quarries also provide many jobs for people.

Hope that was some use to you!

How can limestone be helpful?

Limestone can be helpful in many way, it depends on what state it is in and the uses can vary. As solid limestone or crushed limestone, it can be used by extracting iron from it's ore, to make sodium carbonate, used in road contruction or to make concrete. As CaO (heated limestone), the uses are making steel Fromm iron, to neutrilize acidic soil or it can be a drying agent. CaOH2 (calcium hydroxide or slaked lime - lime stone when it's wetted) neutralises acidic soil. I got this info from my chemistry book :-d

Uses of limestone?

After being quarried it can be "roasted" in a revolving cylindrical "oven" to produce cement. Cement is in concrete and mortar, so the limestone has helped the construction of buildings and bridges. Indeed during the last World War there were even boats made from concrete. Limestone itself can be used as the foundation for road construction, and, like other types of stone, is used to construct stone buildings and stone walls. Lime and limestone are also used in many industrial and chemical processes.
