plastics. the shell is plastic, usually polycarbonate. the foam is usually a type of styrene, also a plastic. The nylon or polyester fabric that covers the padding is also a type of plastic. If your helmet is painted, it's probably acrylic-based; acrylic is a type of plastic.

Helmet shells are primarily manufactured in one of two materials: fiberglass or injection molded plastic. The injection molded plastic helmet generally is the lightest and least expensive available today. It may also have a shorter life expectancy. Its chemical composition can be changed if it is painted or decals are applied to its surface. Damage can occur if it is stored near gasoline, cleaning fluids, or exhaust fumes. Fiberglass helmets can be more expensive than injected molded helmets, especially if the fiberglass layers are hand laminated. Fiberglass helmets delaminate on impact to absorb shock. You can paint them or apply decals without damage. However, because they are build to absorb shock, they can also break or crack if severely impacted in an accident, a fall or even if dropped sharply onto a hard surface.

Usually a thin Lexan/Makrolon shell, and then a thicker Styrofoam insert.

Lacrosse helmets, like most multiple-impact helmets except gridiron helmets, are made out of two parts:

  1. a hard plastic outer shell, in this case with some holes to prevent the helmet form being too hot to wear
  2. an inner protective layer of vinyl nitrate which absorbs the many impacts each lacrosse player will have during a game

Lacrosse helmets also have a face grille to prevent the played being hit by a stick or ball in the face. They are typically wedge-shaped with greater coverage at the front and sides since hits in lacrosse from stick, ball or helmet are unlikely to strike the back of the head.

Lacrosse helmets are often compared to Ice Hockey helmets, but in many ways the collision character of men's lacrosse is closer to gridiron, though I imagine the rules of lacrosse forbid a player initiating contact using their helmet - which would be more difficult than in gridiron because a player trying to hit helmet-to-helmet would first hit a stick.

Lacrosse helmets are nonetheless not as heavy as gridiron helmets, typically weighing around one kilogram including face grille.
