1) You need to score more points than the other team by shooting the ball through the basket in either 4 quarters or 2 halves.

2) You can't walk with the ball - you need to dribble it to move with it. This is called a travel.

3) You can't pick up the ball after dribbling it and dribble it again. (This is called a double dribble.)

4) You have to stay within the out-of-bounds lines when you have the ball. If you don't, this is called out-of-bounds. You also can't go back over the half court line once you've crossed it; it becomes a new out-of-bounds line. This would be called over-and-back.

5) You get foul shots if a person from the defense team fouls you while you are shooting. Fouls include hitting the shooter, etc.

6) If you shoot the ball from behind the arc, it is worth three points.

7) In some games, there is a shot clock, which you have to get a shot to hit the rim before the 30-45 seconds runs out.

8) You are allowed 5 fouls individually. Once you get more than five, you fouled out, and you aren't allowed to play for the rest of the game.

9) As a team, you are allowed 7 fouls a half, before the other team gets foul shots, whether its a shooting or non-shooting foul.

10) You have to have good sportsmanship. If you don't, the referee can call a technical foul and the other team gets two foul shots and the ball, and you are out.
