Taekwondo is first and foremost a Martial Art of self defense, self improvement, and self enlightenment. The sport aspect using a portion of taekwondo skills under specific rules has been growing in popularity as a spectator sport since the first World Taekwondo Championships held in Seoul Korea in May of 1973. With increased popularity of both the Martial Art of taekwondo and the sport, Taekwondo was accepted as an Olympic demonstration event in the 1988 summer games held in Seoul, Korea. It returned as a demonstration in Barcelona, Spain in 1992, and became a full medal sport at the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia.

It depends on your meaning of 'successful'. It isn't as popular as football as far as television goes (audience) but in the main it is very successful; you will find schools that teach it everywhere, and many people practice it on a daily or weekly basis.

The fact that there are so many schools means that the interest is there and people want to do it.

Taekwondo is now the official sport of country of South Korea, but it was first and foremost a Martial Art for self defense, personal improvement, moral culture, and as a path to spiritual enlightenment.

Originally, Taekwondo was developed as a form of self defense for the average Korean, as well as unarmed combat for soldiers in the ROK army. The several founders of the main Kwans (schools) that formed the original association of Taekwondo Masters had a background in Chinese, Japanese, and native Korean Martial Art systems. Many of the early pioneers of Taekwondo honed their Martial Art skills during the Korean War (1950 - 1953), and students of Taekwondo became the most feared in Hand-to-Hand fighting during the Vietnam War (1959 - 1975).

Tae Kwon Do has since been developed into a sport. This was an effort to increase the popularity of the Korean version of Martial Art as different from the Japanese Karate, and to get a consistent set of rules being used by enough countries to qualify as an Olympic sport.

Many schools focus on preparing for competitions and winning trophies. Other schools avoid tournaments, and stick to a strictly combat oriented reality-based training curriculum. Some instructors try to provide a healthy balance of both the sporting as well as the martial aspects.

Taekwondo is absolutely effective, and the only thing it depends on is a properly trained instructor teaching it correctly, a dedicated student learning it entirely and practicing it diligently, and finally the correct application whenever it is needed.

Taekwondo is a highly effective form of self defense in real life. Taekwondo has been proven effective for hand-to-hand combat in war. Taekwondo is a very effective workout. It is an effective way to build muscle, endurance, balance, agility, stamina, strength and flexibility. It is an effective way to build confidence and self control. It is an effective way to meet new people and make new friends. It is an effective way to get to the Olympics, if that is your dream. The full Taekwondo curriculum (not always taught in all schools who claim to teach Taekwondo) includes striking with hands, feet, knees, elbows and head, throws and take-downs, and grappling with pressure points, joint locks, and ground-fighting skills. Too many people think of Taekwondo as only what you see when competitors stand face to face in a sport arena. This is only a portion of what Taekwondo Masters teach, and can utilize in a real fight.

Likewise, taekwondo can be effective in helping taekwondo practitioners get themselves out of violent situations on the street, depending on the circumstances. If you are being mugged at gunpoint, there are great risks, but Taekwondo does teach the optimum response to any one or multiple attackers, armed or unarmed.

Other benefits of Taekwondo:

1. Teaches self defense, self discipline, and self confidence.

2. Will improve overall health, & fitness, and maintains brain plasticity in old age.

3. Keeps kids and youths off the street, off drugs, & out of gangs.

4. Provides knowledge of the history, culture and language of Korea.

5. Make new friends and socialize.

6. Possibly advance into competition level fighting or Olympics.

7. Provides good structure for good habits in life.

8. Teaches goal-oriented methodology to improve chances of success in life.

9. Develops positive moral, & ethical behavior and integrity to resist temptations.
