At the end of Jerry West's career, coach Bill Sharman who was once a great Boston Celtics guard, asked Jerry West to become more of a facilitator. West did and moved to the point guard position, and with this move he lead the NBA in Assists in 1972 at 9.7 assists per game and still scored over 25 points a game. The Lakers with West now at point and Gail Goodrich at shooting guard went on to win 33 games in a row, still a record today, and that team posted at that time the best record ever at 69 and 13 to win their first championship in LA. Jerry West that year probably should have won the MVP award, for his passing, scoring, and his first team NBA defensive team selection. In those years they didn't yet keep statistics on blocked shots and steals, and West's totals were greater than any guard for both. Jerry West, one of the greatest guards to ever play the game.
