I'm not 100% sure but i believe this is significant because on the cover page there is chess pieces by the Westing Mansion and not only that but Sam westing is the 4 people names: Sam Westing, Barney Northrup, Julian R East man and

Sandy McSouthers. so the whole time he was playing everyone into believing he was dead. and when Theo was playing chess but he didn't know who kept moving the black pieces it was sandy( aka barney aka Julian aka Sam) who kept moving the pieces when Theo wasn't looking.
