If the runner was thrown out at first then it is a sacrifice. Fielders choice is when you couldve easily been thrown out at first but the baseman throws it to a different base to try to get someone else out.

Correction

This would be neither, the 1st part of the answer above is incorrect, the later part is correct. It really depends on how the play unfolds. If you hit it to 2nd basemen and you are thrown out at first, then it is just scored a 4-3 groundout -- if the player fields the ball at 2nd and throws the ball anywhere other then 1st to get the batter out, then it would be a "Fielders Choice" -- there is no instance in which this would be a sacrifice if you swing the bat and the ball goes to the 2nd basemen (if this was a bunt fielded by the 2nd basemen... it would be a sacrifice) -------tigersy2k3

Is it a fielders choice with one out and runner on third and batter grounds out to first with runner on third scoring?

Anytime the batter is put out at 1st base on a batted ball it is not considered a fielders choice, it is simply a put out. Now in your scenario if the catcher would have thrown home and the runner coming from 3rd is out and the batter is safe at 1st, then in that case it would be a fielders choice

What does SH in baseball mean?

SH in Baseball stands for "Sacrifice Hit" - also known as a Sacrifice Bunt. It is when a batter comes up with a runner or two on base and less than two outs, and intentionally bunts the ball in a way that the fielders have to get him out- which allows the other runners to move up a base or even score. The batter "sacrifices" himself to allow the other runners to advance.

What is the scoring if you cannot assume an IF could get the batter but the runner makes a delayed attempt to advance on a bobbled ball and gets thrown out or caught in a rundown?

fielders choice

What is sacrifice fly in softball?

A sacrifice fly in softball is when they batter sacrifices themselves (meaning they are getting an out) to score the runner or to move the runner into scoring position.

What is the call if you have runners on second and third with one out and a fly ball is hit to the outfield and is caught. The runner on third base tags up and scores. The runner on second base does n?

It's a sacrifice fly. The batter is credited with an RBI, and the at-bat does not count against his batting average. The runner on second is inconsequential to the scoring decision.

How is a sacrifice fly different from a sacrifice bunt?

A sacrifice fly is a fly ball that is caught for an Out, but that allows a runner to tag up and score. A sacrifice bunt is a ball that is "tapped" with the intent of sacrificing an Out (the batter) to advance the runner or runners on base.

Does fielders choice count as a sac?

Only if that out brings a run home. A sacrifice is when a batter gets out in order to bring a runner home to score. Let's make up some kind of example. Let's say runners are on 1st and 3rd with no outs and the pitch is chopped over the pitcher's head toward the shortstop. It's a pretty slow chop and the shortstop's only option is to try for the 6-4-3 double play and let the runner score from 3rd. Runner at second is out, but the relay to 1st isn't in time. That becomes a fielder's choice and a sacrifice. A fielder's choice is intended to get any other runner out other than getting the sure out at 1st. In many instances, it's a force out to another base, meaning the batter really didn't sacrifice anything, because he's on base, but the runner who would have been in scoring position is out.

When is the infield brought 'in'?

Generally speaking, the infield is brought in when the batting team has at least two runners on base and the team in the field needs to prevent further runs from scoring. There is always a runner on third base in this situation. The thinking is that it gives the infielders a shorter throw to the plate to cut down a runner trying to score. The risk is that with the infielders closer in, a hard-hit ball gets to them more quickly and fielders have less time to react. Generally with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs. This gives them the option of an easy throw home to keep a run from scoring. With 2 outs, the force out at 1st base is enough to keep a run from scoring.

In baseball what is a sacrafice?

Official baseball rule 10.09 (a) Score a sacrifice bunt when, before two are out, the batter advances one or more runners with a bunt and is put out at first base, or would have been put out except for a fielding error. (b) Score a sacrifice bunt when, before two are out, the fielders handle a bunted ball without error in an unsuccessful attempt to put out a preceding runner advancing one base.

In the game of baseball if there is a runner on third base with less than two outs and the batter purposely hits the ball to the right side to score the run is that considered a sacrifice?

No. By definition it is not a sacrifice unless the batter is out. The correct answer is yes. The runner can reach base during a sacrifice on a throwing error or a fielders choice.

Who is credited with scoring a run when using a courtesy runner?

The courtesy runner is credited with scoring the run.

If a batter reaches base on an error is it an official at bat?

Yes. The only time it is not an official "At Bat", is if a batter reaches base on a base on balls, hit by pitch or catcher interference. A batter is also not charged with an "At Bat" if he hits a sacrifice fly (a fly ball out that results in a runner tagging up and scoring), or a sacrifice bunt that advances a runner or runners. He is also not charged with an "At Bat" if the batter reaches base as a result of an error on a sacrifice fly or sacrifice bunt.
