Following some 20 years of the RFU demanding that all Rugby players be UNPAID except for essential expenses - Northern Clubs saw a necessity to pay to keep players from travelling to the more affluent south

On 29 August 1895 twenty-one clubs met at The George Hotel in Huddersfield and formed the Northern Rugby Union - later to be renamed Rugby League
