Best Answer

Roman chariot drivers had little or no protectionat first. If possible, slaves would run out and douse the wheels of the chariots with water to prevent the friction of the high speed on the wooden wheels from catching fire. A driver's best method of protection was to be in the lead and avoid getting upended on the turns. Over time, leg protection such as knee pads were worn and leather wrappings around the bodies.
