There is a total of 6 pieces on a Chess board, they all have the same role, to aid in defeating the other players' pieces. However they move differently from one another, the pawn can move 2 squares forward on its first go and 1 on any turn after that. The rook may move horizontally and vertically, the knight can move forward either 1 or 2 squares and left 1 or 2 squares, the bishop moves diagonally, the queen can move diagonally, horizontally and vertically. The king may only move to squares surrounding it.

Pawns (move forward one at a time, take diagonally. can move two on their first move)

Rooks or Castles (Up and down, side to side any amount until encountering another piece)

Knights (in an L shape. two in one direction, one off the last)

Bishops (Diagonally any amount until encountering another piece

Queen (any direction, any amount until encountering another piece)

King (any direction, one space at a time... with an exception when "castling" - may not move into a space threatened by an opposing piece)
Knight, Bishop, King, Queen, Pawn and Rook.

In ever chess set there are:

  • 2 king
  • 2 queen
  • 4 rooks
  • 4 bishops
  • 4 knights
  • 16 pawns

These are divided into two factions - most famously: the black faction and the white faction.
