Contrary to popular belief, lifting weights while you are still growing does not stunt growth. It was believed that breaking a bone could damage the ends of the bones that are still growing, but this is not the case. Strength training has only benefits, if done correctly, whether you are young or old.

  • Because of the skeletal immaturity of an 11-year-old, it is not advisable that they train with weights. My recommendation is to play regular sports to develop all-around fitness, plus co-ordination, and wait until age sixteen (or at least 15).

Yes, lifting too heavy weights can damage the growth plates on the ends of your arms and legs, and make you gorw up smaller than you would have.

Go for many repetitions rather than really heavy weights. I would limit myself to 15 to 20 pound weights, if I were you.
