Actually it doesn't matter AT ALL how fast your horse is going if you know what you are doing. It really depends on what discipline that you are riding. A normal trail ride is not as much exercise as riding a 3 foot course or performing a 3rd level dressage test. In each of these disciplines, the horse is asked to collect, making it go slower. The speed of your ride has nothing to do with how many calories you burn, lazier horses are actually harder to ride because it takes more work to get anything out of them. Also, anyone can sit on a horse while it is running, but not everyone can do a posting trot.
yes it is. you have to control, stop, start ur horse plus a lot of stuff depending on your dicelpin! (yes I know I spelt that wrong, can someone who knows correct that?)
Yes, it is. It requires much preperation, physical and mental, for it (and not just for the horse- the riders have to stay in shape too) The only part of riding that really can't be called a sport is leisurly pleasure rides. All other aspects of horse riding is pure sport. Reining, barrel racing, jumping, dressage. Competitive trail riding, endurance racing, cart driving, horse racing. It's all a sport that requires team work, comunication, skill, strength, and balance.
Real sport is a loose term most often heard by people justifying defeat.
If, however, you mean that a real sport is an Olympic discipline, then YES Horseback riding is in fact a very real sport. Dressage and Military are 2 of the Olympic disciplines involving horseback riding.

VERY! Many people think it's easy, just sitting on a horse and letting it do all the work. This is very, very wrong. No matter what discipline it is a lot of work, a lot of muscle, a lot of thinking, and a lot of courage.
There are many arguments saying how this sport of harder than that, and so on and so on.
Bottom line:
All sports are difficult in their own way.
What makes Horse Back Riding is, its very athletic. It take cardio and leg muscle. its very time consuming. Though many people don't call it one there are many reasons why it is.
You are also controlling an animal that is approximately 1000 pounds with a mind of it's own.
