It depends. If the player has a low batting average, it can mean that they have a high slugging average (home runs) and focus more on hitting home runs than getting on the base. It can also mean, though, that the batter just has bad contact with hitting the ball or has bad strategizing.

On the other hand, if a player has a high batting average, they are most likely not a slugger and focus more on strategizing (like hitting the ball where the infielders and outfielders can't reach it before the hitter gets on base).

There are exceptions, though, like Joe DiMaggio and Hank Aaron, who both had relatively high slugging averages andbatting averages.

Why is the median better than the mean?

It shows the middle number in a number group rather than the average score in a number group. It isn't exactly better than the mean because they are often very close numbers. But at other times, one number in a group messes up the mean if it is too low or too high, so you can get a better answer by finding out the median.
