Communist theory is derived from the extensive work of Karl Marx. As with any complex political theory there are numerous variants and interpretations of Marx. Most noted are the variations which arose in what would become the USSR: Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin are the main names within the Russian Communist theories. Mao also developed his own variant of Communism for China. Basically any country that at some point was under communist control developed its own variant of Communism.
