Very popular. I myself can't understand why. I don't get enjoyment from watching someone drive in a left hand turn for 258 times around a track. Nor do I like to hear overpaid grown babies cry about why they were pushed into a wall or find out that when some do win they cheated to do it, even though the sport has been around since the 60's and they know the rules. Then there are the sponsorships. Watch the movie with Will Ferrell, "Talladega Nights, The Life of Ricky Bobby" and that will give you a taste of the real life of a driver and their fans. Some people make shrines of these drivers. Wow, they can drive a car real fast, when they cure a disease or work with the poor or make a real difference in our world with their cars, then I might consider reading about it in the paper and that's all.
