Historically, the pole position, which is given to the top qualifier, is the front, inside. However, NASCAR has recently changed their ruling, to allow the top qualifier to choose which position he want, be it front inside, or outside.

Not exactly sure on a 1985, Which motor? On the 1997 2.0 Liter its right in front. From the top find the upper radiator hose, just below is the connection between the transmission and the motor. On the front of the motor pointing into the transmission bell housing should be the crankshaft position sensor.
if it is a 2.4 "x" motor, the crankshaft position sensor should be located in the front of the motor "TUCKED" up behind the starter. it is very difficult to find, but it s there.
