The first organized athletics event for Australian women was in 1906. A 14 year old named Loyal Forward won a 50 yard dash competition.

The first Australian woman to compete in athletics at the Olympics was Edie Robinson at the 1928 Summer Games in Amsterdam. She competed in both 100 meter dash and 800 meter run and did not make the finals in either event.
