Petrograd was the Tsarist capital of Russia (although Moscow was the nominal capital) and the site of the Tsar's Winter Palace. The revolution began there because sporadic demonstrations by discontented citizens were being made for the Tsar to see. These demonstrations grew in size daily until the army units in the area became unable to handle the crowds. Eventually demonstrations became riots which became revolution.
