At the professional level, the pitcher is usually the weakest hitter. At lower levels the pitcher is often the best hitter, because he's often the best all-around athlete. However at higher levels, the only players who can stay in the game despite being weak hitters are the ones who play the most important defensive positions. First, by far, is pitcher. After that the shortstop and the catcher can often reach the higher levels despite not hitting as well as players at other positions.
