There didn't used to be a 24-second shot clock, which didn't come until Oct. 30, 1954. There didn't used to be the 3 seconds in the key rule, where a player can stay under the goal in the paint for as long as they want. Now we have the 3 second rule. There didn't used to be goaltending, where a player will pull the ball off the rim before letting it go in or fall off the rim. Now if a player does this the ref will give the team the points, if a player on the offensive team pulls down the ball while on the rim, they call offensive interference or basket interference, and it will cost them possession of the ball. Goaltending became a violation in 1944, and basket interference in 1958. People could not shoot after dribbling, that was changed in 1909. If a defensive player set his feet in the restriction zone (the small arc under the goal) and the offensive player runs into him, the defensive player will be called for a blocking foul, because he/she was behind the restriction zone, that rule was established in the NBA in 1997.
