The rules concerning when a player is 'down' are different between College Football and the NFL. In the NFL, a player must be 'down by contact' for the play to end, therefore, if he were to recover a fumble while on his knees he would be able to get up and run with it as long as a member of the opposing team did not touch him while his knee(s) were on the ground. There is no 'down by contact' rule in college football. Once a player in possession of the ball has a knee (or elbow) touch the ground the play is over. The player would not be allowed to get up and run in college ball.

Any fumble, whether forward or backwards, is a live ball. The offense can recover the fumble, with certain stipulations: If the play is a fourth down, OR if play is within the last two minutes of either half, only the player who fumbled the ball can legally recover for the offense. A forward pass that hits the ground before a player gains possession is a dead ball and the play stops. A backward pass that hits the ground before a player gains possession is a live ball or considered a fumble and the recovering team will gain possession of the ball.

yes, but first it has to be determined that the defensive player had possesion of the ball and was going to run it. the defensive plaeyer could kneel and make it a touchback, but if he has control of the ball and is going to run it, but fumbles it before he gets out of the endzone it is a free ball.

If you fumble the ball in football is it first down if you pick it up?

If the offense recovers the fumble and advances it beyond the original first down line, yes, it is a first down. If the ball is not advanced past the original first down line then the next play is the down after the one that the fumble occurred on. For example, if a running back fumbles the ball on second down and an offensive line man recovers the fumble but does not advance the ball beyond the original first down line, it is then third down. If the defense recovers the fumble, then it is an automatic first down wherever the player that recovered the fumble is downed.

If a player with the ball trips and falls untouched and the ground causes a fumble is it a loose ball or dead ball ie ground caused the fumble?

In the NFL, the play would be a fumble as a player must be 'downed by contact' for the play to be whistled dead. If there was no contact causing the player to hit the ground the play is still active. In college football, the play would be dead as there is no 'downed by contact' rule and once the player is on the ground the play is whistled dead.

If a player is laying out of bounds and another player is on top of the player laying out of bounds but not touching the ground is the player laying on top also out of bounds?

If fumbled within 5yd line can any offensive player recover the fumble NFL?

Yes. The only rule restricting who may recover a fumble occurs in the final two minutes of a half. This rule states if the ball is fumbled forward in the last two minutes of a half, if the player that fumbled the ball is not the player that recovers the ball, then the ball goes back to the point where it was fumbled. If the player that fumbled is also the player that recovers, the ball is spotted where the recovery was made. In other words, let's say there are less than two minutes left in a half and a player is on the 5 yard line and fumbles the ball forward into the end zone. If the player that fumbled the ball also recovers the ball, the play is ruled a touchdown. If any other offensive player recovers the ball, it is not a touchdown and the ball is brought back to the 5 yard line and the offense keeps possession. If a defensive player recovers the ball, it is ruled a touchback.

What is a touchdown?

== == == == When the ball is advanced past the end zone line it is called a touchdown. It is worth 6 points. A touchdown can be scored on offense or defense by any player. If in the NFL a player tries to fumble backwards but somehow it goes forward is it an illegal forward fumble?

Is a player down if the football hits the ground?

No. A player is down when his knee or back touches the ground. If the ball carrier loses the ball before this happens then it is called a fumble, and both teams try to recover the ball and whichever team does gains possession. Yes. The only thing allowed to touch the ground without you being 'down' is your hands and feet. We even have interpretation questions on whether the wrist and ankles are part of the hand/feet to determine if a player is down. If the ball touches the ground, the player is considered down. This is why the ground cannot cause a fumble. If it was a pass and the WR was deemed not in control of the pass, it is known as a dropped or incomplete pass. The player has to have complete control, but the ball can touch the ground. This is determining the completion of the catch, though, not whether the player is down or not.
