Vladimir Lenin believed that the party should consist of a small group of professional revolutionaries to lead the way. He felt it was madness for what amounted to an outlawed political party to be open to membership by all , because it would easily be infiltrated by the Tsarist secret police and that it would be too unwieldy to do what needed to be done when it ws needed to overthrow the Tsar.

When this disagreement could not be resolved, Lenin created the Bolshevik faction of the

The Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks were factions within the Russian Social Democratic Workers Party. While Martov and the Mensheviks called for a party of inclusion, Lenin and the Bolsheviks wanted a party occupied only by professional revolutionaries. Bolsheviks wanted Socialism by revolution while the Mensheviks sought government by democratic goals.

How were the mensheviks different from the bolshevicks?

The main difference between the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks is the fact that the Mensheviks were more "Orthodox" Marxists, meaning that they believed in a slow, gradual transition from Capitalism into Communism. The Mensheviks believed that before there should be a Proletariat revolution, there must be a Bourgeois revolution, where Capitalism is the main socioeconomic system. Later, there would be a workers' revolution, which would usher in Socialism, and slowly the Socialist government would loosen its control over the means of production and the state would wither away into a Communist system. The Bolsheviks believed basically the same thing, but wanted to move through the Capitalist phase as quickly as possible, arriving at a Socialist state as soon as they could.

Did the mensheviks feel that czar's regime was ineffective?

Mensheviks were a faction that emerged out of Russian Social-democratic party, due to a dispute between Vladimir Lenin and Julius Martov, over minor issues regarding party matters. Although Mensheviks were against Bolsheviks they both shared the same views about the tsarist Russia and considered it an oppressive regime. Mensheviks also participated in Russian Civil War against allied forces and anti-Bolshevik white forces.

What were the Mensheviks?

During the Russian Revolution in the early 1900's, the Mensheviks (which translated in Russian means the smaller ones or the tinier group). The Mensheviks were the rich elite of Russia and they fought against the Bolsheviks or the larger ones. The Bolsheviks were the serfs and peasants which rose up against the rich elite, similar to the earlier French Revolution. The Bolsheviks made up most of the Russian population and eventually won the civil war raging on in Russia based on their large numbers.
