There are not age limits. For qualifying for a Dan rank (black belt) a proficiency exam must be passed. Depending on each style, there may be children and adult ranks.

Many organizations have set minimum ages. My style has set the minimum age of 14. It is ridiculous to think that an 8 year old could effectively protect themselves in a fight against an adult, without or without Martial Arts skills.

The discipline and physical activity are good at any age. However, there are limits to what a kid can learn, and teaching them some of the dangerous techniques could be counter productive.

It depends on what Dojo (karate club) you start training at. Some Dojo have age limits, usually starting from age 5-7, but this can vary. My dojo posts age 7, but will take younger if they are focused and not disruptive.

In theory, you have to be old enough to walk and understand instructions in order to start learning the art.

Any age, preferably younger. One answerer who is a 7th dan black belt in karate and 3rd grade black in ninjitsu, started at 5.

The name of "Taekwondo" is currently about 55 years old, having been first officially approved as the title name for the unification of Korean Martial Art Kwans (schools) on April 11, 1955. However, many of the core technical concepts, tactics, cultural and philosophical influences go back thousands of years into Korea's history. Taekwondo was created by Koreans who relied heavily on ancient ways of life that made the Korean culture unique, and built on the perseverance of a country who relied many times on the training of their warriors to fend of aggression from larger, foreign enemies.

Stemming from the time Koreans first migrated onto the peninsula, and established the first kingdom of Goguryeo (57 B.C.), the Koreans began to develop their own approach to unarmed combat training. These methods were not known to be a precise curriculum, and specific techniques were not handed down in an unbroken chain, but the ways of hand strikes and grappling existed in ancient subak, and kicking was unique to Korea's native Tae kkyeon ("kicking method"). These basic principles were revived in 1944 in the first official Korean Kwan (school) called Chung Do Kwan, founded by Won Kuk Lee.

In any Martial Skills training if you think you are getting the hang of it and infact are really good you have not been at it long enough. In many martial arts the step after the highest 'black belt" is to return to a white belt as you are only then ready to learn and understand.Nobody ever learns martial arts. You get technically superior at it, you incorporate the proper understanding and behaviour into your life ... but you are never done.

If by "learn martial arts" you mean when can you get black belt or win the sparring matches at your club you can do it in a few months or whenever satisfies the "master" enough to pass you. This does not mean you should fool yourself into thinking you know the Art. If you doubt this, wander into the nearest tough neighbourhood and dis somebody.

Red and white belt stands for what rank?

No, in taekwondo, the red belt is not the same rank as a black belt. Depending on your school, it is either one or two steps below the black belt. Some schools use a belt that is half red and half black to designate a black belt who is under age. This is called a poom.In taekwondo, the red belt is commonly associated with the 2nd grade, that is, the level just before black belt. All taekwondo schools have their own colored belt systems, so some schools might use a brown belt instead of a red belt. Some schools might use both a brown belt and a red belt. This differs from the use of the red belt in karate. In karate, the red belt represents the tenth degree black belt.
