It depends on where you are in the country. For example in New York you get about 40,000 and in Atlanta you get 35,000 a month on basic without sponsors. But if you are sponsored you get a major bonus for sponsors like Nike,Adidas,or Puma who might give you and extra 100,000 a month.

With prize appearances and endorsements an athlete who is in the top ten worldwide in premiere events (short sprints, horizontal jumps, 1500 meters, marathon) could make between $100,000 - $500,000 per year.

Most track & field athletes make significantly less however. They have to run fast enough to catch the guy with the money not to mention the guy with the food.

Why are athletes overpaid?

"Overpaid" is an opinion in a Capitalist economy. Athletes are paid so highly because they are in very high demand, and the sport industries make a significant amount of money off of this demand. Because the industries make so much money, they pay as much as they can to attract the best players to play for their team, as most players are going to play for whoever offers them the most money. If society wanted to reduce athletes' pay, the way to do that would be to eliminate the demand of athletes and the industry would no longer profit.
