As far as career home runs go, Babe Ruth broke Roger Connor's all time record on July 18, 1921. Hank Aaron broke Ruth's all time record on April 8, 1974. That would mean he held the record for 52 years, 8 months, 21 days.

Ruth set and broke his own career home run record on many occations after he became Baseball's top home run hitter in the 1920s. He hit his final, and 714th homer in June, 1935, as a member of the Boston Braves. He then retired as an active player.

Depends who you ask.

Ruth hit 60 home runs in 1927.

Most people say this number was broken in 1961 by Roger Maris, who hit 61 that year.

Others, such as Ford Frick (then ML Baseball Commisioner), said that Maris should only be seen as the record-holder if he did so within the 154 games that Ruth had to play in -- which Maris did not. A false urban legend states that Maris' record had an asterisk next to it in "official" books. It's obviously false because there is NO SUCH BOOK. Official baseball simply records that Maris hit 61 home runs in 1961, and that this number is greater than the 60 that Ruth hit in 1927. If an author or writer wishes to state that Maris does not hold the record, then s/he is free to do so.

Between 1927 and 1998, several ball players other than Maris approached the magic number 60, but none bested it. Then, between 1998 and 2001, that number was topped six times. The first one to do so, Mark McGwire, later admitted to using steroids when doing so -- which, strange as it may sound, was NOT against MLB rules at that time. Barry Bonds was convicted for lying about his knowledge of his steroid use, and Sammy Sosa was listed as one of many steroid users in 2003 tests. Because of their steroid use, some feel these players' achievments should not be listed as official records. Again, there is no "official" record book, simply a listing that Bonds hit 73 home runs in 2001.
