If there are no penalties the yardage needed is ten (10). Penalties on either offense of defense can alter the number of yards needed but the standard is ten.

For example, if a first down is initiated at the 20 yard line and your team is going towards the other team's goal (to score), your team would need to get to the 30 to get another first down. Your team would have 4 downs to accomplish this but often use the 4th down to punt the ball to the other team. The scenario just described does not include penalties which can award an automatic first down or set your team back any number of yards depending on the penalty.

How many yards are required to obtain a first down in the game of football?

One of the main objectives in American football -- and a necessary one to score points -- is to gain a first down. In order to get a first down, the offense must gain 10 yards within a series of four plays. One problem that football players and officials have always had to deal with is how to measure the 10 yards needed. Even with all of our technology, the NCAA and the National Football League still uses a length of metal chain attached between two poles.

How many yards does the offensive team of a football team need to get a touchdown?

That depends on where the ball is spotted. There is no set distance for scoring a touchdown. The offense advances the ball down the field by attempting to gain at least 10 yards within four downs. If the team can't move the ball the required 10 yards after three downs, it usually kicks the ball on fourth down, either by punting to the opponent or attempting a field goal. If successful, it then must gain another 10 yards within four downs. This process continues until either the team scores; kicks the ball away; or loses possession, either through a fumble or interception, or by attempting to gain the needed yardage on fourth down but falling short. If the team gains a first down less than 10 yards from the end zone, the call for the team then becomes "first and goal" instead of "first and 10." In this case, the team cannot gain another first down without scoring, unless the defense commits certain penalties resulting in a new set of downs for the offense.

What happens if a person doesn't gain ten yards by fourth down?

if you get to fourth down you would either kick a fieldgoal or punt. If you tried your chances and went for the ten yards on 4th down, and made it, its a first down. If you dont make it, the other team gets the ball on the spot you were tackeled.

What are downs fouls etc. in football?

The team that takes possession of the ball (the offense) has four attempts, called downs, to advance the ball 10 yards towards their opponent's (the defense's) end zone. When the offense gains 10 yards, it gets a first down, or another set of four downs to gain 10 yards. If the offense fails to gain a first down (10 yards) after 4 downs, it loses possession of the ball. Click on the web link at the bottom of the page for more information.
