I don't know, but it happened at the game I was at today, August 23, 2009, Mets v Phillies at Citi Field. Angel Pagan inside the park home run to lead off for the Mets (he also homered in his next at bat), and the game ended on an unassisted triple play by the Phillies Eric Bruntlett. Edited for accuracy by Badlukk13: I'm not sure if a triple-play and an inside the park homerun have ever occured in the same game; however, on August 23, 2009, Angel Pagan did not have an inside the park homerun. On the base-hit in question, the ball reached the wall in center-field and became lodged underneath the padding, and Shane Victorino threw his arms up rather than play the ball. Shane assumed that throwing his hands up instead of playing the ball would keep Pagan to a ground-rule double (like a ball lost in the ivy at Wrigley Field), but Citi Field does not use those ground-rules.

The scorekeeper charged Victorino with an error for failing to field a playable ball, thus Pagan was scored a triple, and reached home on an E8 error. An in the park homerun MUST be legged out legitimately, you cannot reach any base on an error; so, while Pagan did score on the hit, there was no official homerun.

There were many records set in the 1920 World Series. Here some interesting details concerning the triple play in the 1920 World Series and about the World Series itself.

As it turned out, the Cleveland Indians in 1920 not only won their first pennant in the American League but also their first World Series. In 1920, the World Series at that time was decided by the team that won the best of nine games. Many fans would like to know that the Indians were managed by player/manager Tris Speaker. Speaker has a stand out season and hit .388 with 50 doubles. The "Tribe" had an amazing year scoring a record 857 runs that year. Tops in the American League. Their pitching staff was outstanding and featured 31 game winner Jim Bagby.

Sadly the season had been shadowed by the death of their shortstop, Ray Chapman, who died as the result of being hit in the head by Yankee pitcher, Carl Mays.

On top of that was the infamous Chicago Black Sox scandal.

Nevertheless, the Series moved on to set more than one record. The first and only triple play in World Series history was one record.

Game 5 became the turning point in the Series. Cleveland's Elmer Smith took the Robin's spitballing pitcher deep in the opening inning by hitting a grand slam home run. It was the first grand slam in World Series history. The score remained 4-0 until until Cleveland's pitcher, Jim Bagly, hit a three run homer in the fourth inning. This was the first home run by a pitcher in the World Series.

Brooklyn was down but not out.

The Robins rallied in the bottom of the fifth after lead off hitter Pete Kilduff reached on a hit. Then, catcher Otto Miller hit a single and the Robins were threatening with no outs.

The stage was now set!

Normally fans at the time might have expected a pinch hitter to avoid having the Robins' pitcher, Clarence Miller, hit. It wasn't a bad decision as during the regular season, Miller, as a pinch hitter was 6 for 18. Cleveland was expecting Miller to pull, and so the Indian second baseman, Bill Wambs moved back to the outfield grass and inched towards first. Hitter Mitchell, however, lined a shot up the middle, and both Robins took off, expecting a base hit out of this. Somehow, Wambsganss lunged for the ball caught it on a fly, and his momentum carried to second base for the easy second out. Miller, the hitter was stunned and was off the bag. "Wamby" applied the tag for the third out.

Stunned fans had witnessed baseball history. The triple play and the other feats earlier described.

If we consider the first "World Series" to have taken place in 1903, there have been 109 winners of this contest. There was no WS in 1904 or in 1994.
