In league competitions of 8 or less athletes all may get 6 throws. At major championships there is usually a qualifying round or two. From the two rounds all throwers have three trials to try to exceed a predetermined distance. Once achieved they are classed as qualified for the final and withdraw from the qualyfying pool. The next best of all the non qualifiers are then chosen to make up a total of 12 finalists. These then go into the final, usually the next day. The sequence is then repeated. All have three throws and the top eight have a further three throws to decide the winner. In the event of a tie for eighth place it is decided on countback. That is except for an Olympic final when there is no countback rule and nine would go through to the final. (Lance Deal Atlanta 1996)
