Eddy Merckx holds the record for most Tour de France stage wins (34).

It's relatively rare for a rider to die in the Tour de France. Only 4 in it's 100+ year history have died during the race. It is more common, although still rare, to be a pedestrian of the race and to die from being hit by a car or motorcycle, or even a rider. Participants filming the race have also died.
