Through 2013, 10 times a school has had its teams advance to the Final Four in NCAA men's and women's Basketball in the same season. The NCAA sponsored a women's tournament for the first time in 1982, and Georgia was the first school to accomplish this feat in 1983. It would not happen again for 16 years, until Duke sent both of its teams to the Final Four in 1999.
The other schools to achieve this are Oklahoma (2002), Texas (2003), Connecticut (2004, 2009 and 2011), Michigan State (2005), Louisiana State (2006) and Louisville (2013). Only Connecticut has won both championships in the same season (2004).

A final requires just 2 teams A semifinal requires 4 teams (the 2 wining trams make it to the final) A quarter final must deliver 4 teams to compete in the semi final and thus there need to be 8 teams competing - no more, no less. This is true for ALL "finals" of two team sports, no matter how large the competition.
It depends on how many teams are at the tournament.
Basketball teams are ranked according to their performance records during the season. When the final tournament schedule is initially set up, the teams are 'planted' into the schedule with their rankings in mind, which predict the final outcome of the tournament. The tournament schedule is arranged so that teams with higher rankings won't meet up until later in the schedule. So, if the tournament turns out as predicted, the teams will finish according to their initial rankings. For example, a No1 'seed' has a high probability of winning the tournament, while a #11 'seed' is less likely to finish in the top five.
North Carolina has had the most Final Four teams, with UNC going to 18 Final Fours, Duke 15, and NC State 2, for a total of 35 teams.
