A shot taken from the top of the key in basketball is worth two points if it's taken inside the three-point line. If the shot is taken from beyond the three-point line, it is worth three points. The value of the shot depends on the player's position relative to the three-point arc.
In basketball, a "field goal" is the official term for any basket made from the floor other than a free throw. Most of the scoring in a basketball game is field goals. They are worth two points, or three points if the shot is taken from behind the 3-point arc.
No matter where you shoot from, after the three point arc it just counts as a three pointer.
Any points scored within the three point arc is 2 points. Beyond the arc is 3 points and foul shots are each worth 1 point. Also if you are fouled while taking a hot and you make the basket, however many points that was it counts plus you get one foul shot.
It is called making a basket. Two points are awarded if a player makes a basket from within the three point arc... and three points are awarded if a player makes a basket from beyond the three point arc.
