Mathematically speaking, 3 wins is the required minimum for a team to make the playoffs in the current format. If each team in the division won their home games against their division rivals they would each have 3 wins. Conisder that all non-division teams beat them they would all have a record of 3-13. At least 1 team would be the winner of the division and thereby make it into the playoff wildcard game as a 4th seed, which most undoubtedly they would lose.

You do not need a set amount of wins to reach the playoffs. The only thing a team needs to do is win their division.

In 1987, a strike shortened season, two teams the 4-5 Cleveland Browns and the 4-5 Detroit Lions qualified for the playoffs.

In the modern day NFL, since the 2002 division/conference realignment, the following teams have qualified for the playoffs with 8 or fewer victories:

  • 2014 Carolina Panthers, NFCS Division winner, 7-8-1 record
  • 2013 Green Bay Packers, NFCN Division winner, 8-7-1 record
  • 2011 Denver Broncos, AFCW Division winner, 8-8 record
  • 2010 Seattle Seahawks, NFCW Division winner, 7-9 record
  • 2008 San Diego Chargers, AFCW Division winner, 8-8 record
  • 2006 New York Giants, NFCE Division winner, 8-8 record
  • 2004 St. Louis Rams NFCW Division winner, 8-8 record
  • 2004 Minnesota Vikings, 8-8 record, qualified on strength of schedule tie breaker

There is no hard number needed. What is needed is to win enough games to make the playoffs and then win all of the games in the playoffs.
