If your soccer ball has a diameter of 1 foot and the football pitch measures 100 yards by 75 yards, then the number of balls laid flat on the ground to cover the whole field would be the number of balls which will fit across the field by the number which will fit along the length, so, working in feet, 100 yards is 300 feet and 75 yards is 225 feet.

300 x 225 = 67500........that'ssixty seven thousand five hundred.

And that is on a small sized pitch.

If anyone knows the math required to figure out if zig-zagging the balls would allow more to fit, and how many that would allow, please indulge us!

69

I am not sure where 69 came from...

A standard soccer goal or football goal as I would call it, is 24 feet wide by 8 feet high. A size 5 standard football as used in adult games is about 8.5 inches in diameter.

Do the Maths (not Math as our American brethren would have it, it is short for mathematics pluralised you will notice )

Length = 24 feet = 8 x 12 = 288 inches

288 inches divided by 8.5 = 33.8 (33)

Height = 8 feet = 8 x 12 - 96 inches

96 inches divided by 8.5 = 11.29 (11)

33 x 11 = 363 footballs in the frame of the goal one single grid.

As nets are different shapes and sizes it is impossible to glean an exact amount for the number in more then a single layer without that criteria

Suffice to say it is the first row that is important as after that the ball has crossed the line!

If a goalkeeper is say 6 feet tall and has a 2.5 feet reach, which minus shoulder to top head height would be about 8 feet, and a side step of 2.5 feet and a a standing start vertical jump of 1 foot. He could conceivably cover a broad arc of about, 22 feet at ground level, and a more or less linear arc from the middle of the cross-bar to this 11 feet point either side of centre.

Trusting my geometry here I think can reasonably say that there is an area of about 64 square feet , 32 either side of centre. Which is about 144 footballs in total.

The real question is How the hell are you supposed to save a penalty?

There are up to 22 players on the field at a time, 11 from each team. There may be fewer players if some have been sent off or injured. There might be more players on the field, but this is an infraction of the Laws if it occurs during play.

11 on one side 11 on the other side

There is only one ball on a field at a time because then everyone can be focused on the same ball at the same time.
