a few times in bad conditions i have been the only one in my class. but it depends, gp races can have a few hundred. beginner classes tend to have more riders in them. i race 250 intmediate and my class has 10 or so on a normal night.

It does depend upon what specific ruling each country has and also how many entries for a particular race, but a grid is usually 40 gates. If the event organisers are prepared to run heats there can be more riders than that participating or they may decide to run times qualifying and then the fastest lap times get the gate positions with first gate pick going to the rider that cut the fastest lap.
