In older times (Medieval, Tudor, Napoleonic etc) people died trying to swim away from their sinking ships.
The same applies to the Second World War, where some British troops tried to swim across the channel to avoid the advancing German armies instead of waiting for rescue at Dunkirk, some being pulled underwater by the heavy military equipment they were carrying and drowning.
In modern times at least half a dozen illegal migrants monthly drown in the English Channel trying to swim into England in the darkness.
