The Atlanta Braves professional baseball franchise began as the Boston Red Stockings, a charter member of the National Association when it was founded in 1871. When the National Association folded after the 1875 season, they became a charter member of the National League when it was founded in 1876. They played under different names in Boston, the final being the Braves, until 1952. After that season the franchise moved to Milwaukee and played there between 1953-1965. The Braves have played in Atlanta since the 1966 season.
Through 2010, there have been 28 World Series games played at Fenway Park, including two games hosted by the Boston Braves in 1914 while their home park was being completed. The following two years, the Red Sox utilized the newly built Braves Field to host their World Series games because of the huge difference in seating capacity. So, for those who like to keep count, here are the numbers: Boston Braves (2) in 1914. Boston Red Sox (5) including the tie game, in 1912; (3) in 1918; (3) in 1946; (4) in 1967; (4) in 1975; (3) in 1986; (2) in 2004; (2) in 2007.
The Braves moved to Atlanta from Milwaukee for the 1966 season. However, the Braves beginnings are those of the Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first professional baseball team in the United States established in 1869. The Red Stockings folded the following season and several of their players, led by player/manager Harry Wright, moved to Boston and formed the Boston Red Stockings, who were a charter team in the first Major League of baseball, the National Association in 1871. The National Association folded in 1875 and the Red Stockings became a charter member of the National League that was formed in 1876. They were renamed the Red Caps for the 1876 season. The team stayed in Boston until 1952 when it moved operations to Milwaukee. The Atlanta Braves, it can be said, is the oldest existing professional sports franchise in the United States.
