"Swimming Mile" = 1650 Yards = 33 Laps (down and back)

"Real Mile" = 1760 Yards = 36 Laps (down and back)

33 laps (down and back) is equal to one "swimming mile", or a 1650.

This figure based on standard YMCA 25 yard pool.

A "Swimming Mile" (1650 above) is shorter than a "Real mile."

If you want to swim a "REAL" mile read below:

1 Mile = 5280 Feet

5280 Feet divided by 3 feet/yard = 1760 Yards

1760 Yards / 25 Yards / length of pool = 70.4 Lengths

70.4 laps / 2(Down+Back) = 35.2 laps

Since it would be odd to just swim .2 laps at the end I typically swim 36 Laps(Down and Back) to cover 1 mile = 72 Lengths of the pool to cover 5280 Feet

I plan to swim a "REAL" mile in a lake at scout camp in a few weeks which will be 5280 feet(1760 yards). In order to prepare and cover that distance I need to practice by swimming 72 lengths of the 25 yard YMCA pool in my neighborhood.

Well your answer will depend on which pool you are swimming in.

First let me define a lap as one length of the pool, so to go down and back is 2 laps.

25 yard pool - 132 laps = 3300 yards = 1.875 miles

25 meter pool - 128 laps = 3200 meters = 1.989 miles

50 meter pool - 64 laps = 3200 meters = 1.989 miles

There you go. I know 1.875 is a bit off, but in competitive swimming 1650 yards is considered "the mile".

2.4 miles x 1760 yards/mile = 4224 yards

4224 yards x 0.9144 meters/yard = 3862.4 meters

3862.4 meters / 100 meters/lap = 38.6 laps

because in Olympic-sized pool one lap is a round trip of a 50-meter pool.

For other odd sizes, just divide by twice the length of the pool.

1 mile = 1609 metres

2.4 miles = 3861 metres

1 length of a standard swimming pool = 25 metres, so 3861/25= 154.4 so if you swim 155 lengths then you have swum the full distance.

That would depend on the size of the pool.

2.4 miles / 25 yards 2.4 miles can be converted to yards by multiplying by 1,760 which equals 4,224. 4,224/25 = 168.96 or about 169 laps in the pool.

I mile = 5280 feet. So 2.4 miles = 12672 feet.

At 40 feet per lap you would need to swim 12672/40 = 316.8 laps, or nearly 317 laps.

2.4 miles = 3862 metres = 154.5 * 25 metres

So 154.5 laps.
