Kentucky's horse populationKentucky has one of the highest horse populations in the US. (It ranks eighth at best and eleventh at worst but please read on).No one knows exactly for sure (The USDA has very good data but Please, Please read on,) but, I'm guessing around 1,000,000. (Bad guess as you will see as you read on.)

The US population of horses is much more wide spread then the previous answer allows for. According to the US Department of Agriculture and other sources the world equine population is close to 58 million animals and the US has about 5.25 million. Mexico has a million more then the US and China leads the world in horses. The US horse population by state is as follows:

  1. Texas leads the remuda with 600,000 animals.
  2. California has 240,000.
  3. Tennessee has 190,000.
  4. Florida, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania tie for the fourth place position with about 170,000 animals each.
  5. Tie.
  6. Tie.
  7. Ohio has 160,000.
  8. Kentucky, Minnesota, New York and Washington are tied with 155,000 each,
  9. Tied.
  10. Tied
  11. Tied

Fifteen additional states have inventories of 100,000 or more animals. The Amish must account for some of Pennsylvania's lead over Kentucky just as the trophy draft horses of Minnesota show their numbers. Where Kentucky does show a unique lead is in the dollar value of their animals since it leads the US in the 1.75 billion dollars worth of horses and other equines that are bought and sold each year. The pinto, mustang, plowhorses, Walkers, quarterhorse, Arabians and Appaloosa just don't match the value of the hot-blooded thoroughbreds that were created just for the fast pace of the Downs.

Do they hold separate races for filly and colt for triple crown?

Absolutely NOT! A filly is a young female horse...A colt is a young male horse!!! They usually race 2-3 yr. olds in the triple crown, which if I'm not mistaken, is maturity age for horses. I could be wrong, but I don't think so!The age for horses to race in the 3 Triple Crown races--the KY Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes--is specifically 3 yrs. of age. Fillies are most welcome to run in any of the races and a very limited number have won. In order they are:Regret won the KY DerbyGenuine Risk won the KY DerbyWinning Colors won the KY Derby (1988)Rachel Alexandra won the Preakness (2009)Rags to Riches won the Belmont (2007)There is, however, an "unofficial" TC for fillies, known as the "Triple Tiara" that consists of: the Acorn Stakes run at Belmont and the Coaching Club American Oaks and the Alabama Stakes, both run at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, NY.
