Each owner is different. The best thing to do is to read some books that have been written on the Iditarod race. They will tell you lots about what these owners/trainers go through with their dogs such as the breeding, care of, feeding of, & how they care for their dogs during the race.
Cim Smyth is a musher who competes in the Iditarod. He's a Veteran (has been in the Iditarod before) and normally makes a pretty good and strong finish.
Yes, at least one but I'm bettin there have been more. Jan Steves who lists her hometown as Edmonds, Washington, ran her first Iditarod in 2012 winning the Red Lantern award (last to finish/52nd). She plans on running the Iditarod again in 2013.
