Technically it is as whenever the driver/team needs you. It is more of a paid hobby for most of these guys, because they are young and get their travel and living expenses pretty much paid for. The majority of their lives are dedicated to the team for the time they are on it. Obviously your race weekend can start as early as Thrusday, and runs through Sunday, and then there are always constant changes for different tracks the whole next week leading up. If you want to be on a pit crew, you had better love the excitement of it all because it IS your life.
