It is a bit difficult, because so many different organisations nominate "national champions" each year, but if you limit it to consensus national champions (ie. those recognised by the NCAA, which often includes more than one in any given year) then you are left with four:

  • Princeton (24)
  • Yale (19)
  • Notre Dame (12)
  • Alabama (11)
If you limit it to the AP poll (only started in 1935, but often thought of as the "main" national championship, at least prior to the BCS), then the answer is none. The closest are:
  • Notre Dame (10)
  • USC (9)
  • Oklahoma (9)
  • Alabama (9)
