Art Shell coaches the Oakland Raiders, Tony Dungee coaches the Indianapolis Colts and there have been others in the past as well. It's a sign of the times that some current or past Black head coaches have been omitted in this answer because it is no longer an issue whether a head coach is Black, White, Yellow or Red. -----
As of the start of the 2007 season, current African American head coaches are Marvin Lewis-Cincinnati, Mike Tomlin-Pittsburgh, Romeo Crennel-Cleveland, Tony Dungy-Indianapolis, Herm Edwards-Kansas City, Lovie Smith-Chicago.

Currently 6 teams (Cincinnati, Tampa Bay, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Chicago and San Francisco) are the only NFL teams with Black head coaches. Art Shell was the first black head coach in the NFL, coaching for Oakland in two separate tenures. In the history of the NFL, only 10 Black head coaches have been hired.
