These are the "games of the 20th Winter Olympiad", meaning that there were 19 previous events. In general, the Olympics come every 4 years. The exceptions were 1992/1994--that's when they decided to do the Summer and Winter games in separate years, so there's some kind of Olympics every two years. Also, there were no games during World War II (1940/1944). The first Winter Games were held in 1924.

Australia has never hosted the Winter Olympics. It's difficult to host the Winter Olympics in the Southern Hemisphere because it is summer when the games are traditionally played (February)
