5280 feet in a mile divided by 3 for yards = 1760 yards in a mile

1760 yards in a mile divided by 25 yard pool length = 70.40 laps The above is not correct. While the math is correct, that is not the accepted swimming conversion. A lap is 50 yards; therefore, in a 25 yd pool, a lap is down and back. Also, it is commonly accepted that a swimming mile is 1650 yards. This means that a swimming mile is 33 laps (or 66 lengths). ** Some say that a mile is 32 laps (or 64 lengths).
It takes 70.4 (round up to 71) laps in a 25 yard pool to swim a mile

to figure this out: the number of yards in a mile = 1760 divide by 25 = 70.4

Just note that a LAP is down and back, which is 50 yards. 1760 divide 25 yards is 70.4 LENGTHS, not laps. It is approximately 36 laps in a 25 yard pool to swim a mile.

Another note, in a 25 meter pool it would take 32 laps (or 64 lengths) to swim a mile: the number of meters in a mile = 1600 divided by 50 = 32

If a lap is 50 yd, then (1760yd/mi)/(50yd/lap)=35.2 laps ~ 26 unless you want to stay in the pool.

THE ABOVE IS NOT CORRECT AND NOT FROM A SWIMMER (Obviously)

This is correct:

66 laps in a standard 25m pool = a mile

33 laps in an Olympic 50m pool = a mile

Laps = one way always, never there in back. Its a common misconception but any swim coach will always tell you that a lap is one way no matter what the pool.

Well, in the swimming world a mile is a common event in a meet and is 1650 in yards. In this event there are 66 laps, and a lap is one time across the pool. It's a common mistake for people to think that one lap equal 50 yards.

Hope this helped:)

If you wanted to do an actual mile, you would have to swim 71 laps.

70.4. Presumably a 25 yd. lap pool means each lap is 25 yd. Dividing a mile, which is 1760 yd., by 25 gives 70.4. If you mean the pool is 25 yd. long so each lap is 50 yd., the answer would be half of that, which is 35.2.
