There was an unforgettable doubleheader between the San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets on May 31, 1964 at the brand-new Shea Stadium. The Giants won the first game 6-2 behind the pitching of Juan Marichal. But the second game lasted 23 innings and seven hours and 23 minutes before the Giants won 8-6. Total time elapsed for the two games combined: Nine hours and 52 minutes.

There is a story about a spectator who couldn't stay for the second game because he had to catch a plane for California. When he arrived at his West Coast destination several hours later, he was shocked to find out that the Giants and the Mets were still playing.
