There are two types of schools for auto mechanic training - the first is your local collage, the second is a trade school.
Collage, which is generally part-time, can take as long as two years. In contrast a trade school, attending full-time, can take as little as 9 months. The other significant difference is tuition. Your local community collage, on average, will cost a lot less compared to a trade school. There is a third option - it's called "remote training, or online training." There are several online schools that offer automotive online training. It's really a matter of schedule and costs.
