Food takes about 20 minutes to move out of your stomach and start digesting. When you go for a run or swim it takes the blood flow away from your stomach which means that can't digest so if you exercise while the food is still in your stomach it's not going anywhere while your exercising. This can cause stomach cramps, and sometimes even peptic ulcers The biggest reason people say this before swimming is because people have been known to drown because of stomach cramps (usually weak swimmers).

This may or may not help but some people say Half an Hour Some say 45 min. some say an Hour and some even 20 min. But My Family Used to wait 25 to 30 min.
