Wave energy isn't really gathered. It exists because objects are locked in equilibria with potential for potential energy. i essence, they exist statically with the possibility of forces acting on them from objects they are "coupled to" once a force acts on on of the objects, it will exert forces on objects it is coupled to (objects that have the potential for potential energy) and a wave is propagated

example: mass connected to a spring connected to a mass connected to a spring etc

If anyone of the masses is displaced, suddenly, spring forces will be exerted on masses the mass is coupled to. a wave will form. light waves are plane waves that occur with ripples in electric and magnetic fields perpendicular to each other.

AnswerOne kind of machine that "harvests" wave energy uses a floating device that houses a turbine. The wave action forces water back and forth through the turbine, spinning a generator creating electricity. Others use the wave action to move a piston that turns a generator.
