Well, honey, in a Cross Country meet, teams are scored based on the placement of their top five runners. The team with the lowest total score wins, just like in Golf but with more sweating. So, basically, the faster your top runners are, the better chance your team has of coming out on top.

In a varsity race, the first five runners on a team score. Each runner that crosses the finish line scores their place for their team. The five runners' places are totaled and that is the score for that team (so if a team's runners placed 1, 8, 10, 15 and 18, their score ould be 52). The team with the lowest score wins.

Typically the top 5 runners place in a cross country meet. Their finishing positions (places) are added up to give a team score. The lowest score wins. Here's an example using 2 teams, called "A" and "B". If a team gets more than 5 runners in before all of the others finish, the place number includes those runners counts.

A B

1 4

2 5

3 6

9 7

11 8

------------------

26 30

Team A wins

Out of the top 7, or the varsity team, 5 of the runners will score. The top 5 runners' places are added up for every team, and the team with the lowest score will win. For example, if team A had Amanda in 1st, Ashley in 5th, Anna in 6th, Abby in 10th, and Arleen in 23rd, then their score will be 45 because 1+5+6+10+23=45. This is the way it is done at my school anyway

In Track and Field events, a school or team wins a meet, depending on the score. Events are given a first, second, and third place winner. In running events, the three fastest win, in long and triple jumps, the ones who jump farthest win, in the high jump, the highest win, and in shot, discus, and javelin, the farthest throw wins. Each will have three winners, if available. First place gets 5 points, second gets 3, and third gets 1 point. The total for all events is added up. The team with the highest score wins.
